Big Blue Football Continues the Bondelevitch Winning Way

Swampscott won its season opening game 33-18 Saturday at home versus Somerville High School. Full game coverage and photos coming on Swampscott Patch Sunday morning.

At the end of practice Friday, players let out a mighty pregame holler that resonated over Phillips Park.

They then barked out "Big Blue," putting a period on the workout.

That emotion carried over today.

Swampscott scored the first two times they had the ball Saturday against Somerville, including the first of Mike Walsh’s touchdowns, and dumped the Highlanders at home, 33-18.

“It was good to get the lead, we were working a lot of younger guys in today, so it was big to get ahead quickly,” Big Blue coach Steve Dembowski said.

Walsh and Evan Rhodes each had two touchdowns for Swampscott (1-0). Richie Sullivan had a touchdown and a two-point conversion for the Blue.

Somerville High was ranked 35th in the state this week by the Boston Globe/Boston.com football poll.

Swampscott was ranked 49th.

The day has been an emotional one for Big Blue football.

Earlier this morning, students, former players, residents and officials attended a fun and stirring dedication ceremony at nearby Bondelevitch Way.

The town named the entrance to the tennis courts after legendary coach h.

Coach Dembowski, who played for Bondelevitch, said he is probably the last branch in the Bondelevitch coaching tradition.

The Big Blue Bondelevitch Way tradition continues, and took another step ahead today.

The Blue travels to Winthrop next Friday night to take on the Vikings.
