Artificial Surface Recommendation Comes to Selectmen Wednesday
The Athletic Field Study Committee met regularly for much of last year and through February of this year. They prepared a report and recommendations to meet the town's field needs.
A study committee's representatives will recommend an artificial surface for Blocksidge Field when they report their findings to selectmen on Wednesday.
The Athletic Field Study Committee report recommends a publicly funded multi-sport surface at Phillips Park as part of a three-phase project, said Town Administrator Tom Younger.
The project's second phase calls for privately funded light towers, and the third phase, grandstands on the home side, also privately funded.
More details will be available on Wednesday.
The committee also recommends the town seek state funds to help offset the project's cost.
Last summer selectmen asked the committee to study field needs and how to meet them.
The committee studied other improvements, as well, including stands, and private and grant funding possibilities.
Last Town Meeting an artificial surface proposal — that called for public/private funding — failed to gain the necessary two-thirds majority.
On Wednesday, selectmen meet at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

Good too see the town is moving ahead with recreational projects. Spring is in the air and another season of strong storms will be upon Us before we know it. Good news for the homeowners that receive 2-6ft of street run off busting open the doors and bringing adrift their homes. Yep another year and the drainage is still what it was in 1629.

We need to correct our flooding and drainage issues. i am not going to pay more taxes and still live with the severe threat of flooding. The storm drains on Humphrey St are connected to the ocean, so at high tide they are already full add heavy rain and this is the recipe for disaster. The whole town has issues this must be the number one priority long overdue at being addressed and resolved. These issues were documented in 2005 in a town report and here we are in 2013 and still nothing done the time is now. The football field can wait its turn.

Barry Greenfield is too busy making us a laughingstock throughout the state to worry about such trivial matters. Do we have a recall option in Swampscott?

"...seek state funds..." Sure, the state's got plenty of extra cash lying around.

State Road, another line on the south bound side of 1A would bring relief to many neighborhoods.

Thanks, CS, but I'm skeptical that there will be more. And personally, I don't think the state should be handing out money for this stuff right now any more than the town should.

Whiskey,
I also agree that the Comm of MA should not be in the business of this type of funding. I also believe that it will continue as long as Gov. Patrick is in office (any Dem for that matter). We would be fools to not accept the funds while we in essence pay for fields in our neighboring communities.
